BrightonCodingDojo

When: Fortnightly 7-9pm

Where: Future Platforms Offices at 45 Gloucester Street, Brighton BN1 4EW (see map)

Upcoming Sessions:

Max (toastkid) Williams has stepped up to get both Brighton Ruby and the Brighton Coding Dojo going again.

The BRUG will be using the dojo format to build 'something interesting' in Ruby, and the current plan is to meet twice a month to work on the decided project. The main focus of the first meeting this Wednesday will be discussions about what that ‘something’ should be, probably followed by drinks somewhere.

So, if you want to get involved or are just interested in Ruby or coding dojos, come along to the first meeting this Wednesday (12th Nov) at the Werks (http://thewerks.org.uk/) starting 7pm.

If you are interested in coming along please stick your name down: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1322781/

What: In the two hour session, up to twelve developers take turns solving a programming problem.

The Dojo is set up to let everyone experiment with coding in a non-competitive, collaborative, fun environment. Skill levels vary from beginner to Jedi master. Everyone is welcome.

The rules of the Dojo are quite simple. The meeting room has one computer attached to a projector. Two programmers are selected to address the challenge of the week, one acting as the driver and one the navigator. They must speak continually about how they are solving the problem, so that the entire group follows what is being done. If the group fails to understand then the pair must pause to explain. One half of the pair is swapped out every five minutes. The language to be used and the problem to be solved vary from session to session.

The fortnightly session was directly inspired by Laurent Bossavit and Emmanuel Gaillot, who set up the French Coding Dojo, and also by the offshoot Finnish Coding Dojo in Helsinki. The underlying concept is based on Dave Thomas’ Code Kata.
